Manchester United have announced Jadon Sancho’s new squad number.
Sancho will wear the number 25 shirt. The kit was previously worn by Odion Ighalo who left the club in January and was earlier worn by Antonio Valencia, Nick Powell, and Quinton Fortune years prior.
Sancho had been linked with wearing the number 7 shirt, but this is currently assigned to Edinson Cavani.
Sancho will likely take the 7 shirt after Cavani departs when his contract expires next summer.
The National had reported earlier this week that Sancho could take the number 16 shirt. This remains vacant and could be assigned to an incoming midfielder.

The number is just a number at the end of the day, and United will be glad to finally be able to assign it so they can sell some shirts.
Sancho may have such a strong season at 25 he wants to keep it, but a shift to 7 is probably inevitable regardless. Edinson Cavani did so much to lift the ‘curse’ of post-Cristiano Ronaldo 7s last season, scoring 17 goals. He deserves to keep it, and Sancho can bed in without that being a distraction.
Sancho is on holiday at present and will return to United at the start of August, to prepare for his debut against Leeds on August 14.
