Looking back at everything you need to know from the 2023/24 Manchester United season.
Manchester United will look back on the 2023/24 season with some huge highs and serious lows.
This season was bad; however, United’s appalling 2024/25 campaign has seen this forgotten.
At the time, it was United’s worst-ever Premier League finish, only to be bettered the following year, and it was the season that set in motion the club’s 2024/25 season and the demise of Erik ten Hag.
- Manager: Erik ten Hag
The season ended in silverware; however, this may have been a net negative, buying Ten Hag the summer and start of the 2024/25 season instead of the club starting fresh.
Here is everything you need to know about the campaign.

Memorable matches
Despite it being a disappointing season, United had some memorable games.
Manchester United 3-2 Aston Villa
From 2-0 down to a 3-2 win, it was the Christmas miracle that Ten Hag would have been dreaming of.
Garnacho scored twice before the winner came through Hojlund’s first goal for the club, inspiring an excellent run of form.
Wolves 3-4 Manchester United
This 4-3 win over Wolves was one of United’s many exhilarating, drama-filled games during this season, and the most memorable on this Molineux night was Kobbie Mainoo’s winner.
Mainoo picked the ball up in midfield, nutmegged Max Kilman, dribbling into the box before curling it into the far corner. Sensational on his debut campaign.
Manchester United 4-3 Liverpool (after extra time)
The sole positive for United during 2023/24 was the FA Cup run, and the belief around this really began after the quarter-final 4-3 extra-time win over Liverpool.
The Red Devils looked down and out in extra time before a 112th-minute Marcus Rashford drew the sides level, and then Amad scored the winner for United in the 121st minute.
Without a doubt, one of the most memorable games post-Sir Alex Ferguson.
Manchester United 3-3 Coventry City (United won 7-5 on penalties)
United’s win over Liverpool earned an outing against Coventry in the semi-final, which was supposed to be easy, but it ended up proving to be a classic.
It looked to be an easy win, with United 3-0 up in the 58th minute, but a complete capitulation saw Coventry fight back to 3-3 and almost won it with a goal ruled offside, when VAR would have seen it stand.
United then picked up the win in penalties, setting up a Manchester derby clash in the final.
Manchester United 2-1 Manchester City
Manchester United went into the FA Cup final with so much noise around Ten Hag’s future, and even rumours that he would be sacked regardless.
However, record-breaking goals from Garnacho and Mainoo saw United win the cup against City 2-1, ultimately saving Ten Hag.
The game was supposed to have established the pair of academy graduates as future legends; however, Garnacho is gone, and Mainoo could be heading for the exit.
But this game remains memorable.
What else happened in 2023/24
The 2023/24 season also saw off-the-pitch movements, with Ineos completing a partial takeover of Manchester United, buying up 27.7 percent of the club from the Glazer family.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos took over footballing operations and have completely changed the way the club is run since then.
On the pitch, United saw the emergence of academy talent Mainoo, going from youth star to first-team starter and England international.
