Looking back at everything you need to know from the 2022/23 Manchester United season.
The 2022/23 season marked the beginning of the Erik ten Hag era at Manchester United.
United ended a six-year wait for trophy success by winning the Carabao Cup after beating Newcastle in the final at Wembley.
- Manager: Erik ten Hag
After a poor start, including a 4-0 defeat to Brentford, Ten Hag lifted the mood at Old Trafford and improved multiple factors within the team, including discipline and the fitness of the squad.
The team was visibly more united and resilient than they were under Ralf Rangnick in the previous season.
Results and performance levels dipped after the Carabao Cup triumph, notably with the 7-0 loss to Liverpool.
The season will also be remembered for the controversial departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, as Ten Hag asserted his authority over the squad.
Ronaldo blew up his United career with a scathing interview ahead of the World Cup, which led to the club and player parting ways by mutual consent.
United also had one of the best home records in the Premier League, winning 27 matches in all competitions at Old Trafford to equal a club record.
The club’s hopes of a domestic double fell short with a 2-1 defeat to rivals City at Wembley – but Erik ten Hag would get revenge 12 months later.

Casemiro opened the scoring for Ten Hag’s side at Wembley before the Red Devils doubled their lead before the break, thanks to Rashford.
United were crowned Carabao Cup champions.

It started with a controversial equaliser from Bruno Fernandes and ended with Rashford scoring a late winner, after an assist from substitute Alejandro Garnacho.

Jadon Sancho and Rashford provided the goals.
Manchester United 3-1 Arsenal
Arsenal came to Old Trafford after a perfect start to the season, but they were given a reality check when Antony scored on his debut and Rashford bagged a brace.

What else happened in 2022/23
Alejandro Garnacho scored his first goal for Manchester United, assisted by Cristiano Ronaldo against Real Sociedad. He broke a record held by George Best to become the club’s youngest non-English scorer in Europe.
Kobbie Mainoo made his Manchester United debut in the Carabao Cup quarter-final as a starter vs Charlton, age 17.
Antony scored three goals in his opening three Manchester United games. He was the first United player in 50 years to do so. He could not sustain this form, but his winner over Barcelona was a highlight.
The season also featured the first winter World Cup, with Lisandro Martinez becoming the fifth Manchester United player to win the trophy while under contract to the Red Devils. His Argentina side beat Raphael Varane’s France in the final.
