Looking back at everything you need to know from the 1997/98 Manchester United season.
The 1997/98 season is often remembered as a transitional year for Manchester United that ended without a major trophy.
United came second in the Premier League after finishing one point adrift of Arsenal.
- Manager: Sir Alex Ferguson
It was the first full campaign since Eric Cantona’s shock retirement, and his replacement, Teddy Sheringham, took time to adapt to the role.
The Red Devils suffered a huge blow at the beginning of the season when Roy Keane suffered a cruciate ligament injury during a match against rivals Leeds. Former Leeds ace Alf-Inge Haaland infamously shouted in Keane’s face as he lay on the pitch in agony.
Will Ryan Giggs ever be overtaken as English football’s most decorated player?
Keane’s injury deprived United of their most influential leader, and it proved costly because United threw away an 11-point lead over Arsenal that they held in March.
A decent run in the Champions League saw United reach the quarter-finals before losing to Monaco. They also suffered elimination in the FA Cup fifth round and League Cup third round.
