Looking back at everything you need to know from the 2000/01 Manchester United season.

The 2000/01 season saw Manchester United remain a dominant force domestically as they won the Premier League for a third consecutive season.

United became the first club since Liverpool in 1984 to become champions of England three years on the bounce.

With five games left to play in April, United secured the title, and their closest rivals were Arsenal.

In Europe, United reached the Champions League quarter-finals before being knocked out by eventual winners, Bayern Munich, losing 3-1 on aggregate.

The Reds only reached the fourth round of the FA Cup and League Cup as Sir Alex Ferguson focused on winning the league title.

Memorable matches

Manchester United 6-0 Bradford City

United laid down a marker during the earlier stages of the season by beating Bradford City 6-0 at Old Trafford.

Andy Cole, Quinton Fortune, Sheringham, and David Beckham all got on the scoresheet.

It was one of the most convincing performances that season and it sent a warning to the rest of the Premier League.

United were without Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs, Jaap Stam and Paul Scholes for the match.

Manchester United 6-1 Arsenal

This result showed United’s dominance over Arsenal at the time. It ended any chance of a title race because Ferguson’s side moved 16 points clear of the Gunners.

Dwight Yorke scored a hat-trick in the first 22 minutes before goals from Keane and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made it 5-1 at half-time.

The sixth goal came from Sheringham.

Manchester United 0-1 West Ham

United’s unexpected FA Cup defeat was one of the darkest results that season.

The only goal came from West Ham legend Paolo Di Canio, thanks to a blunder from Fabien Barthez.

West Ham went on to reach the sixth round before losing to Tottenham.

Manchester United 3-3 Chelsea

It was a thrilling early-season encounter at Old Trafford as Tore Andre Flo scored a vital double to help Chelsea hold United to a draw.

Goals from Scholes, Sheringham and Beckham appeared to have left Chelsea nursing a defeat, but they turned things around.

Thankfully, it wasn’t enough to derail United’s plans for the rest of the season, although the Reds did lose their first game of the season against Arsenal a week later.

What else happened in 2000/01?

Sheringham had his best season for the club with 21 goals and won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and the FWA Footballer of the Year awards.

Beckham showed his creativity by recording the most assists (12) in the Premier League for the season.
