The early Red Devils academy years (1930s-1950s):
The roots of Manchester United’s youth development can be traced back to the 1930s and 1940s, with the club instating an academy scheme that consisted of fantastic local talent. It’s proven to be one of the greatest decisions in Manchester United’s history.
United really saw its first golden era when The Busby Babes emerged in the early 1950s – which saw the production of talents like Sir Bobby Charlton and Duncan Edwards.
The Busby Babes and the Munich Air Disaster (1950s-1960s):
The “Busby Babes” were the first outstanding bit of academy talent produced at Old Trafford. They played exciting, attacking football – which caused an influx of fans to turn to United’s colours.
Sir Matt Busby’s side achieved domestic and European success – and could have gone on to become the greatest side in the club’s history. However, tragedy struck in 1958 with the Munich air disaster, which claimed the lives of several young players.
Post-Munich (1960s-1970s):
Manchester United have always been known as a resilient club, and the Munich air disaster only made them stronger going forward. The academy continued to produce immense raw talent in the post-Munich era.
This resulted in some of the most legendary figures ever to grace the pitch. Players like George Best and Denis Law emerged. They marked a new wave of talent that left an indelible mark on the Red Devils, with statues outside Old Trafford in the present day.

Class of ’92 (1990s):
The 1990s witnessed the golden era of Manchester United’s academy with the emergence of the iconic Class of ’92.
Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, and Nicky Butt formed the core of a team that dominated English football and achieved historic success under the management of Sir Alex.
They went on to amass unbelievable things for the club, including the infamous 1999 treble-winning season which was Ferguson’s most successful year at Manchester United.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s dominance (2000s-2010s):
As the Class of ’92 moved on, the academy continued to be a vital source of talent for Sir Alex Ferguson as he dominated English football, adding countless titles to Manchester United’s trophy cabinet.
Players like Wes Brown, John O’Shea, and Darren Fletcher all came through during this time and made immense contributions, thus allowing Manchester United’s new owners to spend a little less of their cash along the way.
Recent Manchester United academy graduates:
In more recent years, the academy setup Manchester United boast has produced stars like Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Jesse Lingard.
