Rafael da Silva has backed Bayern Munich star Corentin Tolisso to sign for Manchester United.

Reports have emerged claiming United are in touch with Tolisso’s entourage over a potential move.

Inter Milan are also holding talks, with Bayern valuing Tolisso at £35 million (£31m).

Rafael popped up on Twitter to back Tolisso as one of the best midfielders he has played with, which says a lot considering he has played in the same team as Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

If it’s good enough for Rafa, it should be good enough for us. He understands what is required to be a winner at Old Trafford more than most players.

But it’s hard to know whether there’s actually anything in this one. Bayern have been trying to move Tolisso on since April, with Footmercato reporting at the time that United were keen.

Talented, but a gamble

As Rafael points out, Tolisso is a great player, but there is a reason his move to Bayern did not work out as a big success.

He has struggled with injuries, and United may be concerned about this before committing a fee to sign him.

This season he has made only seven Bundesliga starts, plus six appearances from the bench, scoring once, providing two assists.

He has not played at all since the German league started up again last month.

Still only 25, Tolisso has his best years ahead of him, and he could be a top signing for somebody if he stays fit.

He can play in a variety of midfield roles and in terms of position is comparable to Fred.

As with all of United’s reported transfer targets, moving for Tolisso means we may not get somebody else. Will this mean either Jack Grealish, or Jude Bellingham deals get pushed to one side?

This isn’t a deal we expect to go through. Tolisso’s agents are likely reaching out to United rather than the other way around.

Yet it is gathering a little momentum, and it has Rafael’s backing. That’s noteworthy, at the very least.
