Mason Mount was close to tears after being forced off with an injury in the Manchester derby.

After an extremely turbulent debut season at Old Trafford, injury problems are showing no signs of slowing down for Mason Mount.

Having already overcome two separate injury problems this season, Mount was making his 12th appearance of the season when he started for the Red Devils at the Etihad Stadium.

However, he lasted just 14 minutes before suffering an injury and being replaced by Kobbie Mainoo. Mount issued a “devastated” statement this week having worked so hard to return to fitness.

United’s £55m signing has struggled to string together a run of games since moving from Chelsea. Joshua Zirkzee and Bruno Fernandes supported Mount after his injury, and no one will want him back available as much as head coach Ruben Amorim.

When will Mason Mount return for Man United?

Before the defeat to Bournemouth, Amorim issued an injury update on Mount and revealed that he will be out for “several weeks”.

Amorim also shared how he plans to help Mount adapt to his style of play during his spell on the sidelines. “What I can do is to help Mase, to teach him how to play our game when he’s recovering,” Amorim said. “To try to use that time for him to think about different things.”

The full extent of Mount’s injury has now been revealed by talkSPORT, who claim the midfielder may not return to action until March.

United’s first game in March is against Arsenal at Old Trafford in the Premier League – a clash that Mount will be desperate to be involved in.

The report states that United now “fear” that Mount will be out for several months in what is a huge blow to Amorim’s squad.

Ruben Amorim is a huge fan of Mason Mount

When Amorim arrived at Carrington in November, there was a growing hope that United could see the best version of Mount under the Portuguese coach.

Mount has thrived in a 3-4-3 formation earlier in his career under Thomas Tuchel. He enjoyed the most productive spell of his career playing in that system.

But it is not just Mount’s attributes on the pitch that makes him a good fit for Amorim, with the United boss also a big admirer of his attitude.

Just days after arriving in England, Amorim said he loves Mount. Speaking to the media, Amorim said: “You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. And this is the most important thing for me.”

Mount will desperately want to return to fitness and star under Amorim, but it seems he will have to wait until March.
