Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be Cristiano Ronaldo’s manager for the first time this weekend against Newcastle.
Solskjaer helped convince Ronaldo to re-sign with United, with the Portuguese superstar buying into the manager’s Old Trafford project.
Ronaldo told the club website: “I am here to win again. I am capable, me and my team-mates.”
Newcastle are first in Ronaldo’s path, an opponent he has 11 goal contributions against in 11 matches.
One of these benefitted his current manager, then teammate, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Solskjaer scores
The game came back in 2006, with Solskjaer scoring a brace to down Newcastle 2-0.
Ronaldo had a key role in United’s first goal, as seen in the video above.
Ronaldo jinked past an opponent before unleashing a fierce shot from 20 yards which cannoned back off the post.
Solskjaer was perfectly situated to sidefoot in the rebound first time to break the deadlock.
10 minutes later United scored another poacher’s goal after a Cristiano Ronaldo corner was headed towards goal by Nemanja Vidic and deflected into Solskjaer’s path. The striker did the rest.
Newcastle played five in midfield that day to try and stifle United, but Ronaldo was able to pick them apart eventually, with Solskjaer supplying the finishing touches.
Now it is Solskjaer in the dugout, directing Ronaldo and co. to hopefully secure another victory over Newcastle.
Ronaldo has evolved into more of a poacher since, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he scores a couple of Solskjaer-like simple tap-ins this weekend. His manager will be very proud if he does.
