Three reasons Manchester United should sign Aurelien Tchouameni

Aurelien Tchouameni to Manchester United is the talk of social media. Are United set to make a move before the transfer deadline?

Well, here is a look at what we know currently. The Transfer Window podcast reports United are monitoring the Monaco midfielder.

This was backed up by journalist Sacho Tavolieri, while Jonathan Shrager also insists Tchouameni ‘interests United’. And that is about as far as it goes currently.

This may pick up and snowball now we are into the final two weeks of the transfer window. Based on the scattered reports to date, be wary of assuming it is anything more substantial, but it is encouraging simply to see United linked to the midfielder.

Rather than continue to try and assess whether this is likely or not – let’s spin this forward into why Manchester United should make a move for Aurelien Tchouameni.

Tchouameni is one of Europe’s top midfield prospects

At just 21-year-old, Aurelien Tchouameni is one of the brightest young midfielders in European football and more developed than Eduardo Camavinga, who is currently struggling for form.

Last season Tchouameni ranked second in Ligue 1 for tackles won, and fourth for interceptions.

In a recent Champions League qualifying win over Sparta Prague, Tchouameni scored a header, won three tackles, and made 22 ball recoveries in 90 minutes.

Last season the France under-21 international was talked up by teammate Cesc Fabregas, who wrote on Twitter: “He has the potential to be the complete midfielder. Modern midfield player.”

Tchouameni is a defensive midfielder and also has the ability to get forward and join the attack. Last season he scored three goals.

Completes United’s transfer window and solves immediate need

Looking at Manchester United’s transfer window, with Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane signed, the club have done great business so far.

But very few fans would say this is currently a 10/10 window, with a much-discussed need to sign a defensive midfielder.

Adding Tchouameni would complete United’s window, signing the defensive midfielder the team require to add the necessary balance to the team’s options.

This could allow United to play a midfield three of Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Aurelien Tchouameni, if he succeeds in taking his Ligue 1 form to the Premier League.

More focus on a striker in 2022

Skipping on signing a defensive midfielder this summer indicates United are waiting on addressing the position next year.

One possibility is that United would like to save money for a big deal for Declan Rice, which would be very expensive and possibly twice what Aurelien Tchouameni would cost.

This would be a decision which would mean waiting 12 months to sign a defensive midfielder, and could hurt United’s chances of winning silverware this current season.

Doing a deal now for Tchouameni would lighten United’s to-do list in summer 2022.

It would allow complete focus on signing a striker to replace Edinson Cavani, most likely pursuing Erling Haaland.

This is a position United have to sort out next year, and if we can get the defensive midfielder deal done now, then there are no excuses next summer, and no debate whether to spend big money on Rice or Haaland.
