Mark van Bommel has reached an agreement to become the next head coach of the Belgium national football team, which directly impacts Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Just one week has passed since Rudi Garcia’s departure as head coach. That came after Belgium crashed out of the 2026 World Cup in the quarter-finals.

Senne Lammens made his World Cup debut against Spain in the quarter-finals, coming on in the 71st minute to replace an injured Thibaut Courtois. However, the Manchester United goalkeeper was responsible for a howler that contributed to Belgium’s elimination.

The appointment of Mark van Bommel will come as a positive for Lammens, who is likely to be backed after his World Cup blunder.

How much is Senne Lammens worth now?

Man Utd got a real bargain… how much of a bargain?

Senne Lammens reunited with Mark van Bommel

In June 2023, Royal Antwerp signed Lammens on a free transfer from Club Brugge. Former Netherlands and Bayern Munich star Van Bommel was head coach at the time.

In Lammens’ first season at Royal Antwerp, Van Bommel trusted the young goalkeeper in cup competitions, initially serving as back-up to Jean Butez.

Van Bommel described Lammens as a goalkeeper with “enormous potential” early on in an interview with Het Nieuwsblad, as cited by GOAL, and suggested he could be a future starter for the Belgium national team.

This laid the foundation for Lammens to become Royal Antwerp’s first-choice stopper for the 2024/25 season. Since then, the 24-year-old has signed for United and become a senior Belgium international.

Belgium’s appointment will come as great news for Lammens because he’s already worked with Van Bommel, who trusted him as his keeper at Royal Antwerp.

Courtois is not getting any younger (34-years-old) and Van Bommel already believes Lammens is the future of the Belgium national team. That bodes well for the United stopper.

Mark van Bommel record against Man Utd

Van Bommel faced United four times in his playing career.

The first two meetings came in the 2000 Champions League group stages when Van Bommel was playing for PSV Eindhoven.

In the Netherlands, the Dutch side won the first leg 3-1 before United took three points from the home fixture.

Then, 10 years later, Van Bommel played against United twice with Bayern Munich.

Bayern won the first leg 2-1 of the quarter-final tie, while United won the second leg 3-2. This meant the German outfit advanced on away goals after a 4-4 aggregate scoreline.
