Manchester United kicked off the team’s Premier League season in style on Saturday.

United beat Leeds 5-1 with Bruno Fernandes bagging a hat-trick. 76,000 fans watched in the stands, and millions viewed the game around the world.

Raphael Varane was unveiled to a rapturous reception, with his move from Real Madrid finally confirmed, in old school style. Cristiano Ronaldo was impressed, leaving a message on social media.

Paul Pogba’s four assists drew praise from stars around the world including Antoine Griezmann and Paulo Dybala.

There was more too, with reported Manchester United transfer target Saul Niguez left impressed. The Atletico Madrid ace responded to a message from David de Gea on social media after the opening day victory.

Saul Niguez seems to be linked to United every single summer and this time the links surfaced after AS reported Atletico may be ready to cash in.

ESPN reported that United have held talks with Saul’s agent over a potential switch.

United’s links to signing a midfielder, Saul or any other name, have cooled over the past fortnight in the lead up to the season.

A terrific double showing from Fred and Scott McTominay against Leeds showed they will be tough to replace, with Donny van de Beek left on the bench, and James Garner in the stands.

Solskjaer was coy when asked about new signings after the win over Leeds.

Speaking to BT Sport the United boss said: “I think anything now is a bonus. I can’t say we’ll do any more but anything can happen in football.”

So will a move for Saul happen? At this mid-August stage, it would be a surprise. United’s incomings will depend on outgoings, with Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira who could still move on.

If United can free up the money then one more midfielder could conceivably come in. Whether Saul is United’s first choice is just as unclear. He though, would probably be tempted to make the switch and join De Gea in Manchester. Certainly it seemed like United were on his mind on Saturday.
