Ruben Amorim burned his bridges on the way out of Man Utd, but Jason Wilcox has just shown why he needed to be sacked with pointed praise for Michael Carrick.

By the end of his time at Man Utd, the list of reasons to sack Ruben Amorim was much longer than the list of reasons to keep him.

From poor results to a lack of trust with the boardroom and his public blow-ups, Amorim looked like a man determined to spend the fan credit he never earned in the first place.

Jason Wilcox has now hinted at why Amorim’s tenure at Old Trafford became untenable with some pointed praise for Michael Carrick.

Jason Wilcox praises Michael Carrick

United couldn’t have gone for two extremes on the spectrum if they tried as they did when Carrick replaced Amorim.

If one were a picture of chaos and self-flagellation, the other is the personification of calmness and serenity.

However, that is not what attracted Wilcox to Carrick, who eventually earned the full-time job after a miraculous run as a caretaker.

What attracted him was Carrick’s adherence to club values, which can simply be summed up in three words: Youth. Courage. Success.

He said [via Man Utd’s official website]: “Michael has done an excellent job and thoroughly earned the opportunity to continue as head coach of our men’s team.

“Everyone is delighted with Michael’s leadership and total alignment with our club’s values.”

Wilcox’s comments reflect poorly on Amorim

Carrick, despite being an interim for just 17 games, gave chances to youngsters, played with courage, and achieved a lot of success.

Fill in the blank. Did Amorim lay the foundation for success at Old Trafford?

In contrast, Amorim spoke of a project that never materialised, alienated the youngsters, put the Man Utd fans to sleep with his rigid style of play, and had no success to speak of.

If Carrick personifies United values, Amorim, by the end of his time, became the antithesis of everything the club stood for.

When he was sacked, there was surprise that it took the board so long to do so. It ultimately took a boardroom scuffle to send him packing, but as written above, he had warranted the sack for a long time.

There’s no coming back when you turn your back on the basic ethos of this club.
