Ruben Amorim may have taken two digs at Marcus Rashford with praise and warning for Amad Diallo

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim turned a bad night into a good night with his substitutes helping to turn the game around against Southampton.

A potentially embarrassing loss against the league’s worst team was turned into a satisfying 3-1 home win, ensuring Manchester United remain unbeaten in 2025.

One of the several good decisions Manchester United made was to keep Amad Diallo on the pitch, with the winger scoring a hat-trick.

Amad’s hat-trick was the first of his career – but Ruben Amorim does not want him to get carried away.

Ruben Amorim on Amad Diallo

Speaking at full-time about Manchester United’s man of the match in the win, Ruben Amorim discussed the standards he had for his players.

He also spoke about the demand he has for them to maintain their levels, and not let them drop.

Amorim told BBC Sport: “If he train well, good things are going to happen. He has the same responsibility as every player who play for Manchester United.

“He is in a great moment and he is having a very good season. We see this in the past with a lot of players in our squad, so he has to continue to work and play like that.”

A dig at Marcus Rashford

While we don’t really want to twist Ruben Amorim’s comments, it is difficult not to apply them to the club’s current outcast, Marcus Rashford, who is not with the squad.

Amorim’s messaging on Rashford has remained consistent ever since he dropped him for the derby.

The head coach has always invited Rashford to prove his quality and desire in training at Carrington and force his way back in, his messaging has been consistent. The player has not responded in kind.

Right after the olive branch after the derby, Rashford offered an interview expressing his desire to move on. He has not played a minute since.

Amorim says ‘every player’ has the same opportunity as Amad. Rashford included. And he’s not taken it.

The second aspect of Amorim’s comments was the warning issued to Amad, that he must carry on working hard and maintain his levels.

Amorim says that United have seen in the past that players have not been able to maintain their consistency, and the first you think of is Rashford in recent seasons.

Rashford struck 30 goals in 2022/23, and then just 8 goals in 2023/24. This season he had 7, before his exile.

Amorim knows Amad is on a hot streak – and wants him to stay consistent. He has a contract now running to 2030, one that is on reasonable wages.
