Ex-Manchester United and Liverpool striker Michael Owen has now had his say on how the Red Devils handled their approach to Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim.

Ruben Amorim is now a free agent after the 40-year-old former Manchester United manager was axed from the Premier League club on Monday morning.

The ex-Sporting CP head coach was in charge at Old Trafford for 14 months and Amorim’s last match in charge was United’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United.

However, the outspoken Amorim watched his United run come to an abrupt end after he dropped a swipe on the Red Devils hierarchy at the weekend.

United confirmed in a club statement that the Premier League club’s leadership “reluctantly made the decision” to sever the Red Devils’ ties with Amorim.

Speaking on the Premier League Productions’ Fanzone, pundit Michael Owen was asked if United made the ‘right call’ to sack Amorim on Monday.

“I think it was,” he said. “Yeah, I think eventually it was.

“I think this type of scenario, this decision has been coming for a while, but Ruben Amorim has just basically given Manchester United hierarchy all the tools to say, ‘Right, we’ve had enough.’

Owen also admitted that he could see parallels between United’s situation with Amorim compared with how Enzo Maresca left his role at Chelsea last week.

“I think they were probably 50/50 on whether to keep going anyway,” he continued.

“Certainly, the results, recent results have been in and out, but certainly not enough to sack him, you know, in recent days. It’s certainly what’s happened off the pitch.”

What are your hopes and expectations with Darren Fletcher in charge at Man Utd?

Owen added: “A little bit like Maresca at Chelsea, not so many days ago, and Amorim has just given them all the tools they needed to say, ‘Right, okay, you’ve had your time. It’s not going well. You’re now saying things that are detrimental to the club. We’ve had enough. Move on.’”

Darren Fletcher’s reign is expected to be temporary and United are tipped to look for another caretaker manager to see out the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign.

The 41-year-old United cult hero will take charge of United for the Red Devils’ forthcoming Premier League encounter against Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday.
