Ruben Amorim‘s tenure at Manchester United has come to an abrupt end, with the team sitting sixth in the table.

Manchester United have released a statement on Amorim’s departure. Here it is in full.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.
“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.
“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
There is one word in there that underlines Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s stance on Ruben Amorim’s exit.

It’s that word ‘reluctantly’.
Ratcliffe wanted to give three years to Amorim
Sir Jim Ratcliffe was clear in an interview given at the start of October that he wanted to give Ruben Amorim more time.
“Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That’s where I would be.”
Ratcliffe’s Ineos appointed Amorim in November 2024, and certainly did not want to create a ‘hire and fire’ culture.
But this is where they have landed, with Amorim dismissed without completing a full season in charge, start-to-finish.
The words from United also commented that they believe this change will give them more chance of a top Premier League finish.
It was a sign that Ineos had lost faith in Amorim and his project, despite Ratcliffe’s intention to see it through for another 18 months.
