Amorim all but sealed his fate at the weekend after the ex-United manager took aim at the Red Devils’ hierarchy in the aftermath of the 1-1 draw against Leeds United.

The 40-year-old Portuguese coach was dismissed from his role at United, only 14 months after his appointment as the Premier League club’s head coach in 2024.

Amorim left Old Trafford with the Red Devils in sixth place in the Premier League table after United’s result against Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon.

Rene Meulensteen’s immediate verdict on Ineos axing Ruben Amorim as Man Utd manager

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos finally severed their ties with Ruben Amorim and the Red Devils must now seek out a new permanent Manchester United manager.

Darren Fletcher has been installed as caretaker manager at the Premier League club ahead of United’s encounter with Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday evening.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Rene Meulensteen has admitted that Ineos must tread cautiously in their desire to find a long-term successor for Amorim at United.

“They don’t want to make another mistake and very quickly go for someone that they’re sort of trying to fill the void with,” he said, as per BBC Sport.

“They need to really look.

“At the end of the day, this is not all about Ruben Amorim. It’s about Ineos and the whole team behind it, as well.

“Because they’ve basically not backed up what they’ve been saying.

“So, there’s [sic] some questions to be asked as well. They don’t want to make the same mistake.”

According to reports, United could wait until the summer to appoint a new head coach and would use a caretaker manager to see out the remainder of the season.

Meulensteen insisted that Ineos and Co “need” to make sure that their candidate pick for Amorim’s successor at United has “pedigree” to their managerial name.

The former United first-team coach continued: “They have to be really calm and say, ‘What do we need? What do we need to make sure that United is going to get back on track in the way that is the United style?’

“They need somebody with [a] pedigree. Someone who understands the Premier League, who’s been successful in the Premier League.”

Meulensteen added: “Someone with a strong personality, with charisma. Someone with good vision about how to take Manchester United forward.

“The most important thing is that they need to get things right in the background first.

“And be very, very clear that when they do make an appointment, that everything is aligned.

“At this moment in time, it wasn’t aligned.”

Amorim left Sporting CP during the 2024-25 season and the former United manager arrived at Old Trafford as the permanent replacement for Dutchman Erik ten Hag.
