The football world has been left shell-shocked as Ruben Amorim has been sacked as Man Utd manager, and the club have officially confirmed why they chose to do it now.

Ruben Amorim’s final press conference as Man Utd manager will now be remembered similarly to Roy Keane’s infamous interview with MUTV, which never saw the light of day.

Keane left United after that interview, and Amorim has suffered the same fate, but it begs the question: were his performances not enough reason to take action?

Why Man Utd sacked Ruben Amorim now

For a manager with a win rate of 31% in the Premier League through his tenure of more than a year at the club, the news of the sacking shouldn’t be surprising.

However, Ineos were desperate for Amorim to work out, and before the Leeds game, there were zero indications that his job was in danger.

Amorim’s outburst after the Leeds game was widely thought of as remarkable and very incendiary, but not many expected a conclusion to happen so quickly.

In their official announcement declaring Amorim’s sacking, United have reasoned that sacking Amorim now “will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish”.

They wrote: “With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”

There have been no indications in the club statement that this decision was anything but sporting, but Man Utd fans know better than that.

Are you happy with Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe?

United remain insistent that Amorim is sacked because they see an opportunity to climb up the league table, but that has been true for nearly three months.

What next for Man Utd

Ineos were expected to provide calmness and competence after years of scattergun planning under the Glazers, but their tenure is off to a rocky start, to say the least.

Not only did they dither in sacking Erik ten Hag, but their immediate hiring of Amorim has also aged like milk, where they dithered again before panicking.

In the immediate future, expect Darren Fletcher to instill some calm in a chaotic situation as he prepares the team for a trip to Burnley.

However, Ineos do need to provide fans with a proper long-term plan that isn’t reliant on the manager, because Amorim has exposed their priorities on his way out.

What next for Man Utd? Probably some immediate improvement brought about due to a change in system, because Amorim was holding the team back.

However, that doesn’t mean he was the only problem at the club. Far from it.
