Ruben Amorim sacked as Man Utd manager

Manchester United have confirmed that Ruben Amorim has been sacked as Man Utd manager after a tumultuous 14 months in charge.

His tenure ended after a “breakdown in relationship” with the hierarchy, thereby leaving Ineos with more questions than answers.

Ornstein reports that Man Utd’s U18 coach Darren Fletcher will take over as interim manager, with his first test being an away trip to Burnley.

It has escalated rapidly because not many thought Amorim’s comments would end this way, this quickly, but something clearly rubbed him the wrong way.

What do YOU think of Ruben Amorim’s latest comments? Is there trouble behind the scenes?

“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the head coach.

“I know my name is not Conte, Tuchel, Mourinho but I’m the manager of Manchester United. It’s going to be like this for 18 months or until the board decide to change.

“I’m not going to quit. I’ll do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me.

Fletcher could be expected to take charge of first-team affairs until the summer, after which a permanent decision will be taken.

Ineos could be hoping to take advantage of the post-World Cup carousel to get the name of their choice, but it brings to a close a difficult year at Old Trafford, fraught with poor decisions.

Amorim sacking doesn’t reflect well on Ineos either

It speaks volumes that for a manager with a 31% win rate in the league at the club, it took him going against the hierarchy to finally get sacked.

Not only does it paint Ineos’ priorities in a poor light, it also speaks of indecision and a sunk-cost fallacy from the decision-makers at the club.

Putting Fletcher in charge of the first-team affairs until the end of the season is exactly the move Glazers used to get criticised for.

There’s a lack of direction, and misplaced priorities which can’t be ignored just because the manager is sacked.
