Manchester United have made the decision to sack Ruben Amorim and now attention turns to who will replace him in the hot seat.
Less than 24 hours after Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United in the Premier League, journalist David Ornstein has revealed that Ruben Amorim has been sacked.
Ruben Amorim SACKED – What is your INSTANT REACTION?
Amorim spoke out against the club hierarchy, hinting that he had been told to change his tactical approach by Jason Wilcox.
Darren Fletcher is expected to step in temporarily on an interim basis, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos will surely be looking for a longer-term option.

Xavi Hernandez
During the hiring process for Ruben Amorim, Ineos interviewed several other candidates for the job, so Ratcliffe will have built a rapport with other options.
The 7 managers contacted by Ineos about the Man United job before Ruben Amorim’s appointment
Out of those options, Xavi remains out of a job and available if United were to make a move.
United fans wanted Xavi when he was first linked to the job, and his 4-3-3 system would align with what Wilcox seemingly wants from a United manager.
Enzo Maresca
Just a few days before Amorim’s departure, Chelsea decided to part ways with Enzo Maresca following a similar fallout at board level.
Maresca did a good job at Chelsea, but his tense relationship with the owners at Stamford Bridge might put Ineos off of a move considering the nature of Amorim’s exit.
Michael Carrick
United legend Michael Carrick was previously part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching setup at Old Trafford, and in 2022 he took charge of Middlesbrough in his first management role.
Carrick guided Middlesbrough to the play-offs in the Championship but narrowly missed out on promotion. He was sacked in June 2025 and remains out of a job.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
If Ineos wanted to return to Solskjaer, the United Champions League-winning hero is also currently out of a job after leaving Besiktas earlier in the year.
Solskjaer spent three years as United boss between 2018 and 2021 and built a strong relationship with the dressing room before a poor start to the 2021/22 season cost him his job.
But Solskjaer is still adored by the United fanbase and would likely prove a popular hire.
Ruud van Nistelrooy
Before Amorim’s arrival, Ruud van Nistelrooy stepped in as United’s interim manager and put together a strong run of results.
Van Nistelrooy’s win rate as United boss, even only for four games, was impressive. Players seemed to enjoy playing under the Dutch striker.
However, Van Nistelrooy’s short-lived stint as Leicester City manager casts doubt on whether he would be a good long-term appointment.
