Manchester United have been drawn against West Ham in the Carabao Cup third round.
The game will be held at Old Trafford and will be decided via penalties if required, with no replays.
The tie will be played on the midweek of September 22nd or 23rd.
This will fall just days after Manchester United’s visit to West Ham in the Premier League, which takes place on the Sunday 19th.
Doubling up
West Ham have started the season well with two wins from two, following on from an impressive 2020/21 campaign.
Manchester United played West Ham three times in 2021/22, winning all three.
These included a 3-1 win away from home in December, before a 1-0 FA Cup win at Old Trafford in February which went to extra-time.
United then won the Premier League game at Old Trafford 1-0, with a narrow game decided by an own goal.
West Ham have caused Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side problems, not only during these games, but in the 2019/20 season, in which they won 2-0 at the London Stadium, the last time United visited with fans in attendance.
The late September league game will be a tough one, and there could be plenty of rotation among both sides for the Carabao Cup match.
It may be more fringe players than youngsters. Drawing a Premier League side limits chances for academy players, but we could see one or two.
Manchester City of course landed a far easier tie, against League One opponents Wycombe Wanderers, as is par for the course.
