Two Manchester United academy players criticise Super League plans

The revolution is growing, slowly. After a day which saw Bruno Fernandes express discontent towards Manchester United’s part in the Super League proposals, two academy players have followed suit.

Dillon Hoogwerf and Arnau Puigmal, who have both featured for the under-23s this season, posted messages on Instagram.

Former Ajax youngster Hoogewerf shared a message titled ‘Rest in peace football’, in reference to the devastation the plans could cause to the structures of leagues around Europe.

Young midfielder Puigmal posted a message on his Instagram stories, too, which made his feelings on the Super League clear.

Good for them to speak up

Both players are in differing positions at United. Midfielder Puigmal’s contract is expiring.

The MEN reported he is likely to be released amid a suspected desire to return to Spain. So he has little to lose by posting his criticism.

Hoogewerf’s move is bolder. He has been a regular for the under-18s and has had a handful of under-23 appearances lately.

Next season he will move up to the under-23s regularly and be expected to become a key player for the side.

So he deserves extra credit for being brazen enough to express his feelings on a public platform, and we hope there will be no repercussions for him.

Former star Ander Herrera voiced strong opposition against the plans yesterday, saying he ‘could not remain silent’.

There are likely to be more voices speaking out over the coming days. These are proposals which nobody is happy with.
