José Mourinho will be remembered at Manchester United for an array of reasons. One of them is his ‘heritage’ remark he repeated during a frosty press conference.
It was a starkly divided era when José Mourinho was Manchester United manager.
Replacing Louis van Gaal with so much promise, many were convinced Mourinho was exactly what United needed at the time – but there were too many faults in the hierarchy, with the club being run like a circus.
Fast forward to 2026, and Mourinho has returned to Real Madrid as manager. The 63-year-old can boost United’s quest to strengthen the midfield department depending on the big decisions he plans to make this summer.

Jose Mourinho lost it with Paul Scholes during his time as Man Utd boss… was he right?
Man Utd need heritage with Champions League return
There’s a lot of excitement at United with the team back competing in the Champions League.
Michael Carrick was appointed permanent head coach after restoring consistency with results as interim over the course of five months.
United are hoping to strengthen in the transfer market to take the team to the next level. Recent reports in Spain suggest the Red Devils could take advantage of a player sale at Real Madrid.
Real Madrid are open to offers for Aurelien Tchouameni, and reports suggest Eduardo Camavinga could be available for £52m.
Perhaps Mourinho was thinking ahead in 2018 when he went on a 12-minute defence of his record in the wake of the Champions League exit to Sevilla.
Mourinho had multiple interesting encounters with the press during his time at Old Trafford, but few were as memorable as this one.
He explained “football heritage” by saying United had reached the Champions League quarter-finals once since losing the 2011 final.
“Do you know is also heritage? Nicolas Otamendi, Kevin de Bruyne, Fernandinho, David Silva, Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero – they are investments from the past, not from the last two years.
“One day when I leave, the next Manchester United manager will find here Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic, of course David de Gea from many years ago, they will find players with a different mentality, quality, background, with a different status and know-how.
“I could be in another country with the league in the pocket, but I am here and I am going to be here, and no way am I going to change my mentality.
“I’m not going to disappear from the tunnel, running immediately; the next match, I will be the first to go out. I am not afraid of my responsibilities.
“When I was 20, I was nobody in football. I was somebody’s son, with a lot of pride, and now at 55 I am what I am. I did what I did because of work and because of talent and my mentality.”
It could be argued that Tchouameni and Camavinga are examples of ‘heritage’ United could do with when competing in the Champions League.
How much should Man Utd pay to sign Aurelien Tchouameni? What would you consider a fair fee?
Do you think he would be the right fit for Man Utd?
Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga are Champions League winners
Tchouameni and Camavinga have both won the Champions League during their time at Real Madrid.
Camavinga has won it twice.
The first was in 2022, and the French pair won it as teammates in 2024.
Mourinho’s comments from 2018 wouldn’t sound more fitting if one of these players signed for United this summer.
