What happens next?

After passing his medical, Ronaldo is expected to fly into England to tie up all the necessary paperwork and be presented as a Manchester United player.

United would want to present him, take official photographs and conduct club interviews, as well as ensuring all the paperwork is submitted before the transfer deadline.

However, with Ronaldo due to fly back to Portugal for the international games, there is a small chance that the paperwork is processed from abroad in time for deadline, and the player remains in his homeland, and is only officially presented once the break is over.

Portugal face Ireland at home in a World Cup qualifier before taking on Qatar in a friendly, and then they travel to Azerbaijan on Tuesday 7 for another qualifier.

This means Ronaldo could fly back to England on September Wednesday 8, with a view to hopefully making his debut at home to Newcastle on September 11.

The issue of visas, quarantine and so on, could potentially slow things down. Hopefully he will be able to make his bow at home to Newcastle.

After that United have a Champions League away game in Switzerland, so there will be plenty of international travel for Ronaldo over the next fortnight.

Reports that the medical have been passed were a formality, but welcome news all the same. The quicker that was sorted, the quicker the paperwork can be signed off.
