Andre Onana’s future at Manchester United is unclear heading into what is expected to be a busy summer transfer window.

The Europa League has become Manchester United’s top priority this season as the only route to Champions League football, but Andre Onana’s terrible mistakes vs Lyon has piled pressure onto Ruben Amorim’s side.

It means everything is to play for when United face Lyon in the second leg at Old Trafford. Before that, the Red Devils face Newcastle United and Ruben Amorim has axed Onana for the Premier League clash.

Amorim defended Onana publicly after the Lyon draw, but it seems the United coach is running out of patience behind the scenes with Altay Bayindir picked ahead of him for the trip to Tyneside.

How much Man United must earn to make Andre Onana profit

Onana was signed by United for £44m from Inter Milan under Erik ten Hag back in 2023.

While there have been some patches of good form, Andre Onana has made far too many mistakes which could lead Amorim and Ineos to look elsewhere for a No.1 shot-stopper.

Onana signed a five-year deal with United when he signed in 2023, meaning the cost of his transfer and salary is spread out throughout those five years.

According to football finance specialist Stefan Borson, Onana’s remaining book value is around £30million, meaning Ineos would have to demand a fee higher than that to make a profit.

If Onana is sold for less, United would take a hit to their Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) calculations, which are already looking fairly bleak.

Before the January window had even opened, reports suggested Amorim wants to sign new goalkeepers at United.

Last month, it was suggested that Onana was not concerned about his United future, but that might have changed after his recent mistakes.

Onana has been linked to Saudi Arabia and United could maybe extract a £30m fee that they would need to break even on the Cameroon international.

In terms of a replacement, Ineos have been busy at work. United are considering a move for Zion Suzuki after several scouting missions on the 22-year-old.

United have also made contact with Bart Verbruggen while United remain keen on Senne Lammens – there are plenty of options on the cards if Onana is pushed towards the exit.
