Man Utd have scouted Andre Onana replacement more than any other club, deal for ‘world-class’ goalkeeper years in the making

It was a pretty awful night in goal for Andre Onana over in Lyon, and now Manchester United’s hunt for a replacement could ramp up.

Thursday night saw the biggest game of Manchester United’s season so far, with a crucial away leg in the Europa League quarter-final.

Prior to the game, Andre Onana talked a lot, which meant he really had to back it up on the pitch. However, two big errors from Onana proved costly for United, turning victory into a 2-2 draw.

This was the latest shaky performance in a long list for the United number one and is sure to have seen Ruben Amorim’s faith in his goalkeeper shattered – if it wasn’t already.

Amorim is thought to want an upgrade if the opportunity presents itself, and Saudi Arabian sides are linked with signing Onana. Now, United’s potential replacement talk is heating up.

Manchester United considering a move for Zion Suzuki once again

With Onana having such a poor season, with so many errors in goal for United, it would be inconceivable for the club to be content with him going into next year.

Now, United in Focus understands, after speaking with Graeme Bailey, that United are once again taking a keen interest in signing Japanese shot-stopper Zion Suzuki.

We can exclusively confirm that no club has watched Suzuki more in recent months than United, with the Red Devils holding a long-term interest in the 22-year-old.

Suzuki took the decision to reject United earlier in his career as he went in search of first-team football elsewhere in Europe, and he found that at Parma – renowned for their goalkeeping acumen with Gianluigi Buffon one example.

As well as Suzuki, United remain interested in Championship’s clean sheet leader James Trafford, who has kept 28 clean sheets this season.

Zion Suzuki has become world-class since rejecting Manchester United

United’s interest in Suzuki predates Onana, stretching back to the summer of 2023. Playing for the Urawa Red Diamonds at the time, Suzuki snubbed a move to United in favour of game time in Belgium.

After moving to Saint-Truiden, Suzuki was named the best goalkeeper in the league, which earned him his move to Parma.

For Parma in Serie A, Suzuki has become ‘world-class’ and throughout the past two years United have retained interest as he slowly builds his way up the levels to the point where he is now ready – possibly – for Old Trafford.

Despite playing for a team on the cusp of relegation, Suzuki has shone, ranking highly for high claims, saves and sweeping actions. Importantly, he has made zero errors leading to goals.

He could be the perfect Onana replacement.
