Manchester United threw away a potential win against Lyon on Thursday night during the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final.
It was a loud night in Lyon, with the home support impressive and hostile as Manchester United would have been expecting in anticipation of the night.
However, in honesty, the atmosphere did not get to United at all, and Ruben Amorim should be proud of most of his team as they were seconds away from claiming a massive victory with a performance they can be proud of.
United had some impressive performers but also some who were absolutely atrocious in the game. Two standouts were the goal-scorers, Leny Yoro and then Joshua Zirkzee – who thought he had won it.
In the end, it was United target Rayan Cherki who scored the equaliser at the death for Lyon, giving themselves hope ahead of next week at Old Trafford.
The game ended 2-2, and there was one United player who was atrocious, causing him to be singled out for criticism.

David May slams Andre Onana for Manchester United performance
After a dramatic build-up to the game, Andre Onana was going to have to back up his words. However, he did the opposite with two howlers in goal-handing Lyon a cheap draw.
Due to his errors, Onana was in the firing line for criticism as David May berated the United goalkeeper on MUTV at half-time.
“It’s shambolic from Onana. It’s not a difficult save, it’s a shocker. I’m not sure what he’s trying to do. He makes an absolute rick of it.”
After the second error from Onana, May also criticised the Cameroonian at full-time.
“They get let down again by an error from the goalkeeper. It’s not good enough.”
May was not alone in his stance, with United fans ripping into Onana on social media. Another in agreement was Paul Scholes, as he referred back to Onana’s pre-game conflict with Nemanja Matic.
Scholes said on TNT Sports: “He was probably wishing he kept his mouth shut. I’m not sure what he’s trying to do; it’s an awful mistake from him.”
Onana showing shades of David de Gea 2023
This performance from Onana in such a crucial game is a sure-fire way to kill any faith Amorim still held in his starting goalkeeper. However, this is not a unique event.
Back in 2023, Erik ten Hag was hoping for Europa League glory when his side matched up with Sevilla. Here, David de Gea was at fault for at least two of the goals in a 3-0 defeat, which sealed his fate and eventually saw Onana replace him.
With Saudi Arabia potentially interested in signing Onana this summer, this performance could also be the final straw for the goalkeeper position at United.
Amorim cannot be pleased with Onana, and this display will have him wanting an upgrade. Now we just have to see if it will be at all possible this summer because Onana will first have to leave.
