Andre Onana’s mistakes proved incredibly costly for Manchester United against Lyon in the Europa League.
There is huge pressure on Ruben Amorim to win the Europa League this season as the only remaining pathway back into the Champions League.
However, Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Lyon on Thursday means it’s all to play for in the return leg at Old Trafford. It could have been much more comfortable for the Red Devils without Andre Onana’s terrible mistakes.
Amorim was urged to drop Onana for the trip to Newcastle on Sunday afternoon, and on the morning of the clash it has been revealed that he is not even in the travelling squad.

Man United fans react to Andre Onana being dropped
Onana was slammed by United fans for his display on Thursday evening, and even though Amorim defender his goalkeeper publicly, he has made the decision to drop him for the trip to Tyneside.
United fans on social media were delighted by the decision, with many praising Amorim for taking action after Thursday’s mistakes.
One fan posted: “Ruben Amorim dropping Onana today is not only good for the team, it’s good for Onana. I think it’s brilliant management from Amorim. He’s not afraid to make these calls.”
A second supporter was pleased to see Amorim be “ruthless”: “Amorim is him, he’s actually ruthless, he defended Onana after the match but he was certainly going to punish him and make him realize his mistake, this is a welcome development, I expect that, as many players will leave this summer, bring it on!”
Another added: “This is the right call. If he chooses to back him for the Europa League so be it, but it’s good to shield him for this game – even if it’s simply shielding him from himself.”
One fan suggested that Onana being dropped suggests he will be sold by Ineos this summer: “Onana getting dropped from the squad completely is a massive indicator he’s gone in the summer.”
Finally, another supporter argued that Amorim is protecting Onana’s confidence: “Totally correct by Amorim to drop Onana, both for the team’s sake and his own. If he made more errors today, it would break his confidence more, as well as push his seemingly already frustrated teammates further away.”
Why Ruben Amorim has dropped Andre Onana for Newcastle clash
Whether Onana starts against Newcastle has been a talking point ever since he spilled the ball to Lyon in the dying seconds of the Europa League clash.
It is now confirmed that Andre Onana will not even be in the squad, but Amorim did suggest that the goalkeeper would retain his spot against Lyon.
According to iNews, Onana is not injured so Amorim’s decision to leave out Onana is tactical.
They claim Amorim has instructed Onana to sit out of the Premier League clash on Sunday so he can prepare for the crucial second leg against Lyon in the Europa League.
He could be one of several changes Amorim makes against Newcastle to keep his players fresh and ready for Thursday’s showdown.
If Altay Bayindir stars against Newcastle though, it could leave Amorim with an extremely difficult decision to make later this week.
