Predicting which players will survive Ruben Amorim’s summer rebuild, with one Man Utd star to get contract ripped up and four released

Add as preferred source on Google

After experiencing a relatively quiet January transfer window, Manchester United are expected to be a lot busier in the summer.

Despite allowing some players to depart on loan, Ruben Amorim made just two signings in the mid-season window.

The 40-year-old continues to implement his philosophy and system but will already be looking ahead to the end of the season and possible transfer targets.

This plan leaves several current first-team players facing uncertain futures…

With this in mind, United In Focus have taken a look at which players can expect to stay and which ones can expect to go.

Andre Onana

Andre Onana may not be destined to reach the same level as some of United’s past goalkeepers, but the African is pretty safe for now.

Contract Expiry: June, 2028

Altay Bayindir

Altay Bayindir has impressed whenever called upon so far this season.

The backup keeper has done really well done and will be expected to rival Onana for the number one jersey next season.

Contract Expiry: June, 2027

Tom Heaton

Tom Heaton’s future at Manchester United is pretty clear. The 38-year-old will leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Contract Expiry: June, 2025

Leny Yoro

Leny Yoro has already established himself as one of Amorim’s first-choice centre-backs.

The young Frenchman will be sticking around and expected to continue his development.

Contract Expiry: June, 2029

Lisandro Martinez

After injuring his ACL against Crystal Palace, Lisandro Martinez is ruled out for the rest of the season.

Martinez is an important player for Amorim though, and is in no danger of being sold.

Contract Expiry: June, 2027

Matthijs de Ligt

Perhaps not as highly valued as some fans would’ve expected, Matthijs de Ligt has been a peripheral figure since Amorim arrived.

Having said that, even though the United manager seems to prefer Harry Maguire, De Ligt is unlikely to move on in the summer.

Contract Expiry: June, 2029

Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire’s revival under Amorim has been one of United’s biggest talking points.

The end of the season will see Maguire head into the final year of his contract, and while a renewed deal at the age of 31 is unlikely, it would be a surprise to see United cash in following such an influential campaign.

Victor Lindelof

Victor Lindelof’s impending free agency has already attracted interest from clubs, home and abroad.

West Ham made a transfer enquiry for Lindelof in January and may try again in the summer when United are almost certain to release him.

Contract Expiry: June, 2025

Jonny Evans

Jonny Evans has been a magnificent servant to United. His two spells with the club, spanning 13 years, have seen him make 240 first-team appearances and lift countless trophies.

However, now at the age of 37 and approaching free agency, this season will be the defender’s last at Old Trafford.

Contract Expiry: June, 2025

Ayden Heaven

Signed from Arsenal in the January transfer window, Ayden Heaven was Amorim’s second signing.

He may be sent out on loan for the 2025-26 season, but he certainly won’t be sold.

Contract Expiry: June, 2029

Patrick Dorgu

Patrick Dorgu’s future under Amorim is the most assured.

The young Denmark international was Amorim’s first signing and will be expected to make a big impact next season.

Contract Expiry: June, 2030

Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw’s struggles with injury have continued since Amorim’s arrival. The England international just cannot seem to string any sort of consistency together.

Knowing how demanding Amorim’s system is, which includes flying wing-backs, Shaw will do well to survive the summer transfer window.

Contract Expiry: June, 2027

Diogo Dalot

Although he doesn’t set the world alight, Diogo Dalot remains a mainstay in Amorim’s lineups.

The Portuguese full-back can probably expect more competition next season, but he is a sure candidate to stay.

Contract Expiry: June, 2028

Noussair Mazraoui

Very similar to Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui is far from a star in Amorim’s system.

The Moroccan has his uses in a three-man backline though, and will probably be kept around to help with squad depth.

Contract Expiry: June, 2028

Manuel Ugarte

A big player for Amorim during their time together at Sporting Lisbon, Manuel Ugarte is going nowhere anytime soon.

Casemiro

Casemiro is as good as done at Manchester United.

The Brazilian is the ultimate professional, which is probably the only reason he’s still there, but the end of the season will see United look to sell him, and if they struggle to find a buyer, expect negotiations over releasing him to take place.

Contract Expiry: June, 2026

Kobbie Mainoo

An important player under Erik ten Hag, Kobbie Mainoo has yet to show the same impact under Amorim.

He won’t be the first player put up for sale in the summer, but a big improvement will be needed next season.

Contract Expiry: June, 2027

Toby Collyer

Toby Collyer’s breakthrough this season has been one of just a few highlights.

Collyer has done excellently whenever called upon. He is in no danger of leaving in the summer and can probably expect more game time next time around.

Contract Expiry: June, 2027

Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen is out of contract at the end of the season and will leave United on a free transfer.

Contract Expiry: June, 2025

Bruno Fernandes

One of only a few undroppable players under Amorim, Bruno Fernandes would have to force a move to be sold in the summer.

Contract Expiry: June, 2027

Mason Mount

Mason Mount’s time at United has been held back by injuries and fitness problems.

He remains a valued player by Amorim, and although he is unlikely to be sold in the summer, will need to prove his physical durability to be kept on beyond 2026.

Contract Expiry: June, 2028

Amad

A forgotten man under Ten Hag, Amad has been the player to benefit most from Amorim’s appointment.

Recently signing a new deal, the young Ivorian will definitely be a United player next season.

Contract Expiry: June, 2030

Alejandro Garnacho

Amorim has admitted he ‘really wants’ Alejandro Garnacho to remain a United player, and although fans want the same, the Argentine’s future will be decided by the club’s need to comply with the Premier League’s rules on Profit and Sustainability (PSR).

Garnacho will stay unless financial reports mean Sir Jim Ratcliffe absolutely has to sacrifice a valuable homegrown player.

Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford has already joined Aston Villa on loan.

The Villains have included an option to buy the United winger for around £40 million in the summer.

While Rashford is unlikely to set the world alight between now and the end of the season, his buy option makes him a relatively low-risk option for Unai Emery.

Contract Expiry: June, 2028

Antony

Similar to Rashford, Antony was also allowed to leave United on loan.

The Brazilian joined Real Betis until the end of the season, and has started life in La Liga well.

Antony scored on just his second appearance for Real Betis, and, should he continue in the same way, will probably join Manuel Pellegrini on a permanent basis in the summer.

Contract Expiry: June, 2027

Joshua Zirkzee

Joshua Zirkzee has been one of United’s most disappointing signings in recent years.

Although he has popped up with some important goals, including a winner on his debut and an important equaliser in United’s FA Cup Fourth Round tie against Leicester City, the 23-year-old doesn’t suit Amorim’s system.

Contract Expiry: June, 2029

Rasmus Hojlund

Having failed to live up to his price tag, Rasmus Hojlund, like Zirkzee, has been a huge disappointment.

However, acknowledging the lack of service given to him, Amorim is likely to stick with the young Dane for another season.

Contract Expiry: June, 2028
