Manchester United’s need for a midfielder was highlighted with a mixed bag of a performance against Wolves.
The dynamic of Paul Pogba and Fred did not really work, and Scott McTominay’s absence was sorely felt.
One player who may be able to help is Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez.
The Times reported last week Saul has been offered to United on loan.
United have not so far progressed a deal, but of course the move for Cristiano Ronaldo has taken up plenty of attention.
It is quite possible United end up making a push to sign Saul before Tuesday’s deadline, given the need to sign a midfielder.
Saul dropped to the bench
Saul’s desire to leave Atletico Madrid may have been sped along after last night.
Having begun Atletico’s two opening games in the starting XI – albeit shoved out on the left wing – he was dropped to the bench against Villarreal.
This wasn’t totally surprising, considering Atletico are shopping him round for a potential exit.
Saul was named among the substitutes and came on in the 70th minute with the score at 1-1.
The game ended 2-2 with Atletico needing a late equaliser via an own goal to secure a home draw.
Kieran Trippier also played all 90 minutes. He appears set to stay, with United planning to keep Diogo Dalot, reports Fabrizio Romano.
Camavinga also benched
Another midfielder left on the bench is Eduardo Camavinga, also reported by The Mail to be a target for United.
Camavinga was a second half substitute as Rennes were beaten 2-0 away at Angers.
Camavinga has now spent the last four games on the bench after starting the season in the side.
He has only one year remaining on his Rennes contract, and a deal could potentially be done with the Ligue 1 side hopeful to avoid losing him on a free transfer.
Whether United make a move for Saul or Camavinga, we shall soon see once and for all.
