Manchester United’s 3 best players in 2-1 win over Wolves

Manchester finished the last game of the Premier League with a 2-1 win against Wolves.

The result meant that Manchester United achieved the impressive feat of remaining unbeaten away from home in the league this season.

United fielded a weakened side ahead of their Europa League final in a dead rubber game for both sides.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made plenty of changes to the starting XI, giving a start to goal scorer Anthony Elanga, and presented the rest of the squad with an opportunity to impress ahead of their trip to Gdansk on Wednesday.

Here are the three best players from today’s win…

Donny Van De Beek

Donny Van De Beek has had a difficult first season at Manchester United but was given the start today and it was probably his best performance since he joined.

He did the simple things well, something he has struggled with in the past, and provided good deep cover for United’s defence.

He was also energetic and creative linking up play with the attacking players, laying off tidy flicks, turns and stepovers to create space for attacking moves.

This attacking verve came to fruition just before half-time, winning a penalty to make it 2-1.

It remains to be seen where Van De Beek will fit into this United team in the long term, having only started three league games this season.

But he needs a continued run of form like he showed in today’s game to have any chance of muscling his way into Ole’s future plans.

Anthony Elanga

The academy graduate marked his second Premier League appearance with a dream first goal for the club and found himself in excellent goal-scoring positions throughout the game.

He timed his run to perfection for the goal and met the ball with a strong header to send it flying past the helpless Wolves goalkeeper.

He found himself on the ball less in the second half, but linked up nicely with Amad Diallo and Daniel James, offering a pacy threat on the left-wing.

It will bring Ole and United fans confidence in the next crop of youngsters coming through the academy, showing they are up to the pressures of Premier League football, with Hannibal Mejbri and Shola Shoretire coming on in the last ten minutes.

Juan Mata

TheSpaniard, who may have been appearing in a United shirt for the last time today, showed the skill and experience the side will miss if he does depart.

Mata calmly converted his penalty and United’s second goal just before half-time, which looked emotional after his mother passed away last month.

He is certainly not as agile as he once was, covering less space across the attacking sections of the pitch than he used to, perhaps contributing to the rumours of his departure.

But his ability on the ball is still there for all to see, jinking his way past tackles and sliding passes through defensive lines like he has done for the Red Devils for seven years.

If it is to be his last game in a Manchester United shirt, Juan Mata can be happy with the performance and an outstanding career.
