Ethan Laird sealed his loan move to Swansea City this week, joining the Championship club for the season.

Laird is stepping up a level after a loan in League One last season where he impressed at MK Dons.

The right-back told Swansea’s website that United winger Dan James had given him the lowdown on his former club.

Laird said: “Jamo is a good lad and gave me a little debrief on the club. He is a great player, he was successful here and I hope to do the same. He only had good things to say.”

There were further messages of support from Laird’s United teammates, with Mason Greenwood and James Garner were among those who congratulated the 20-year-old on social media.

Right-back progression

While Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the clear cut first choice right-back at Manchester United right now, Laird still has a chance to eventually try and take his place.

The jury remains out on Diogo Dalot, and the same applies to Brandon Williams, who is expected to go out on loan this season.

Laird needs a very strong season on loan at Swansea this year, and then probably another season on loan in the Premier League.

If he can pass both tests then he will be ready for United. If he has a really outstanding season at Swansea, then he could be fast-tracked into the first team set up next season.

Laird is a right-back who is a strong dribbler, with his confidence driving attacks and running to the touchline a natural part of his game. Defensively he is sound, although his attributes will be tested in the Championship.

The big challenge for the youngster has been staying fit. He managed to do so at MK Dons last season from January to May. Being able to stand up to a whole season in the Championship will be tougher, and hopefully Laird can come through it as a stronger and better player.
