Bastian Schweinsteiger has wished Manchester United good luck for the upcoming Europa League final.

The retired German international left United two months before the club’s previous success in the competition in 2017.

Schweinsteiger did play one group stage game during United’s route to get to the final.

Now he has sent his best wishes to the 2020/21 squad, saying he is rooting for the Red Devils against Villarreal.

Schweinsteiger was past his best when he was signed by Louis van Gaal, and Jose Mourinho made clear he wanted rid upon his arrival.

Mourinho’s handling of Schweinsteiger did not leave him in a good light, and by time he was allowed to leave for MLS in March 2017, it was a relief to draw a line under the matter.

Schweinsteiger holds no grudges towards United, clearly, and is hoping his former side can enjoy success tonight.

The German played alongside Michael Carrick, now on the coaching staff, and the likes of players Marcus Rashford, David de Gea, Paul Pogba, and Luke Shaw.

Former star Wayne Rooney has flown out to Poland for the game, while former boss Sir Alex Ferguson is among the travelling party in Gdansk.

Schweinsteiger’s message shows how even though he played just 35 games for the club, he is proud to have been associated with the Red Devils, albeit just for a short time.
