Manchester United record goalscorer Wayne Rooney has flown out to Poland for the Europa League final.

Rooney posted a picture on social media on board a plane to Gdansk, with son Kai.

Kai Rooney joined United’s academy in December 2020, and hopes to one day follow his dad’s famous footsteps.

Rooney retired from football last year and is currently manager of Derby County.

His season is over after he helped them avoid relegation on the final day of the Championship season.

Reunited

Rooney joins former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson in Poland, who has also made the trip.

Ferguson travelled as part of United’s official party, and was joined by former chief executive David Gill.

Rooney will be watching former teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer try to win his first trophy in management, along with Michael Carrick, who he also played alongside.

The last time United won the Europa League in 2017, Rooney was a second half substitute in the 2-0 win over Ajax.

The victory in Stockholm was the last one of his many medals he received as a Manchester United player, and he is evidently keen to savour the experience once more.
