Iran football legend Ali Daei has congratulated Cristiano Ronaldo on breaking his record.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals for Portugal against Republic of Ireland to move to 111 total international goals.

This took him clear of Daei, whose record of 109 goals had been equalled by Ronaldo at Euro 2020.

Daei sent a message on Instagram to Ronaldo, saying he hopes his record will last a long time.

A tough record to break

Daei’s broke Ferenc Puskas’ goal record in 2004 and retired from international football in 2006 with his tally at 109 goals.

Ronaldo is now on 111 and counting, and he will be looking to try and put reach a number which is truly unassailable.

The biggest threat to Ronaldo is Brazil’s Neymar, who has 68 goals at the age of 29.

If Neymar plays to 36 and beyond like Ronaldo then he will have a shot of eclipsing Ronaldo.

So Ronaldo will be pushing over the years ahead to go on and put together a number which Neymar and any other challenger will find impossible to beat.

Rival Lionel Messi has 76 goals for Argentina and is unlikely to be able to surpass Ronaldo’s figures at international level, especially if the Portuguese forward keeps going.
