Viktor Gyokeres stance on reuniting with Ruben Amorim leaves Man Utd waiting as initial contact made

Manchester United will be in the market for a new striker this summer as Ruben Amorim looks for goals next season.

In five Premier League games since the March international break, Manchester United have scored just five goals.

Alejandro Garnacho’s smart finish against Newcastle United and Rasmus Hojlund’s close-range strike against Bournemouth on Sunday are the only Premier League goals since United’s 3-0 win over Leicester City.

Seeing Hojlund find the net was a huge relief, but United will still be in the market for a new striker.

United are closing in on Matheus Cunha, but the Brazilian is expected to play in more of a number 10 role.

That leaves United’s striker hunt wide open, and a familiar name is back in the headlines…

Viktor Gyokeres stance on Manchester United

The name of Viktor Gyokeres has been connected with a move to Old Trafford ever since United appointed Ruben Amorim in November.

Gyokeres was a goal machine under Amorim at Sporting, smashing 66 goals in 68 games under the now-United boss, all whilst adding 23 assists.

The Swede is enjoying a frankly ridiculous season in Portugal, racking up 52 goals and 12 assists in 48 games.

Gyokeres is expected to leave Sporting this summer and a reunion with Amorim has been speculated.

Reports claim that United are ‘looking closely’ at Gyokeres, with Amorim surely desperate to join forces again.

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg claims there is ‘still no agreement’ between United and Gyokeres.

The problem here is that Gyokeres has still not given the green light for United to advance on a move.

Amorim is described as being ‘very keen’ on Gyokeres, with United holding ‘concrete talks’ to sign him.

This sounds like Gyokeres is holding off on any talks with United until he knows the club’s European fate.

United can reach the Champions League by winning the Europa League, but must get past Athletic Club to reach the final.

Gyokeres is seemingly watching with interest and may need United to reach the Champions League in order to engage in a move.

Manchester United decision-makers may have different ideas in attack

Gyokeres would surely be Amorim’s pick in attack, having worked together in Lisbon.

A deal won’t be easy and it’s difficult to lay any groundwork for a deal with Gyokeres stalling.

Amorim is not the only man with a say here, and Jason Wilcox may well prefer Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap.

United are keen to sign Delap in a £30million move, with a release clause now active following Ipswich’s relegation.

Much like Amorim working with Gyokeres, Wilcox worked with Delap at Manchester City and will explore a reunion of his own.

Then there is Christopher Vivell, who also wants a sticker he knows very well.

United are interested in Benjamin Sesko after Vivell previously helped both Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig sign the Slovenian.

Sesko is more in the mould of Delap in terms of being a young striker with room to develop, whereas Gyokeres is a more finished product.

United’s key decision-makers all have their personal favourites here and will want their men signed.

All three can’t realistically join United, though, and we hope to see Amorim, Wilcox and Vivell come together to sign the right man for the job at Old Trafford.
