Fabrizio Romano claims Manchester United believe Matheus Cunha deal will be in place ‘very soon’

Manchester United rescued a late point at Bournemouth on Sunday as the Premier League season comes towards its end.

Ruben Amorim’s full focus is on the Europa League, but Manchester United were seeking a boost ahead of facing Athletic Club this week.

United drew 1-1 at Bournemouth on Sunday, as Rasmus Hojlund’s late equaliser salvaged a point at the Vitality Stadium.

Bournemouth striker Evanilson was sent off for a foul on Noussair Mazraoui, but United left it late to bag the leveller.

Amorim is a big fan of Antoine Semenyo and may well have been impressed with the Ghana international again as he opened the scoring for Bournemouth.

Semenyo is likely to be on United’s radar for the summer transfer window, but United’s priority signing in attack has become clear.

Fabrizio Romano on Matheus Cunha to Manchester United

Reports last week suggested that United were closing in on signing Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Cunha dazzled United fans in Wolves’ 3-0 win over Leicester City on Saturday, taking his Premier League goal tally for the season to 15.

That is a joint record alongside Roberto Firmino and Gabriel Martinelli in terms of the most goals by a Brazilian player in a Premier League season.

Cunha is showing his quality on a regular basis for Wolves, tempting United into a summer move.

Fabrizio Romano now claims on YouTube that Cunha’s move to United is ‘entering into important days’.

Romano claims that United ‘really believe’ that a deal for Cunha can be agreed very quickly due to the release clause in his contract.

United are ready to trigger Cunha’s £62.5million release clause but are planning to pay it in instalments – meaning talks with Wolves must be held.

Romano adds that talks between United and Cunha’s representatives are ‘going very well’ with Cunha sold on the move to Old Trafford.

“For Matheus Cunha, we are entering into important days,” said Romano.

“As I told you, Manchester United are in very advanced talks to sign Matheus Cunha.

“They really believe at Manchester United that they can close this deal for Matheus Cunha very soon. Why? Because they are prepared to pay the release clause, £62.5million, but in instalments, so they need the contact with Wolves.

“The contacts with the player’s side are going very well, very well. Matheus Cunha is keen on the move, the project is attractive, the salary is being discussed, so let’s wait for the final steps of this story, but the agreement between Cunha and Manchester United is not expected to be a problem.

“Manchester United will be ready to pay that money to Wolves, so the expectation is to see Matheus Cunha as the first signing of the summer for Manchester United; that’s the idea, that’s the plan,” he added.

Don’t expect Cunha to United to be confirmed for a while

United are moving quickly to try and sign Cunha, which is actually refreshing.

We have seen far too many summer transfers drag on over the years, and United’s first signing last summer came on 14 July.

We aren’t even in May and United are trying to land Cunha, starting business early in an attempt to bolster Amorim’s squad quickly.

Wolves still have four Premier League games to play, though, and we wouldn’t anticipate any deal being announced whilst Cunha is still in action for Wolves.

Wolves end their season at home to Brentford on 25 May, when United host Aston Villa.

Cunha will have a Molineux farewell if United can get a deal in place, but any confirmation of his arrival may only come in June despite seemingly being advanced right now.
