Marcus Rashford is set to return to Manchester United but his future is still up in the air.

After his work rate in training was criticised, Marcus Rashford was frozen out by Ruben Amorim, and it led to the 27-year-old leaving on loan to Aston Villa.

Villa have a £40m buy option for Rashford, but Unai Emery’s side currently sit seventh in the Premier League and without qualifying for the Champions League a permanent deal looks unlikely.

Rashford’s season may be over after he suffered a hamstring injury which ruled him out of Villa’s FA Cup semi-final over the weekend.

Now, United are in talks for Rashford to return early and carry out his recovery at Carrington. Amorim has confirmed that Rashford will report back for pre-season, but his future at the club is still undecided.

It seemed that Villa were in ‘pole position’ to sign Rashford this summer, but all of a sudden the Premier League outfit might walk away from the deal.

Rashford will no doubt have other options this summer and he has not ruled out staying with Manchester United this summer.

What he has ruled out, though, is a potential swap deal this summer.

According to the Daily Mail, Rashford’s camp has ruled out a swap deal for Villa’s Ollie Watkins or Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze.

United considered a Rashford/Watkins swap deal but it seems it would be too complex from the players’ perspectives.

Crystal Palace have shown interest in Rashford, but it seems their only option will be if they match his asking price rather than a swap.

Ruben Amorim comments on Marcus Rashford’s return

While Rashford certainly left United on better terms than Jadon Sancho, it seems he still burned some bridges on his way out.

Amorim slammed Rashford in training, and it is hard to see a way back for him under the Portuguese head coach.

Even though Amorim has been pleased by Rashford’s progress, it feels increasingly inevitable that he will be moved on in the summer.

“I know Rashford really well and everybody knows the talent that he has. So I already spoke about that. He’s a top player, if he wants. So I’m not surprised. And like I said, it’s the same with Antony, it’s a good thing,” Amorim said.

Ineos want to raise over £100m in sales this summer and Rashford will play a big part in that. If he isn’t sold, it could hinder United’s own transfer plans.
