Manchester United were showing interest in Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney, but it seems Everton are in pole position.
Transfer rumours this week included Manchester United’s interest in Hayden Hackney, a player familiar to Michael Carrick from his time in charge of Middlesbrough.
Hackney played over 100 matches under Carrick and was a big admirer of the now-United boss.
Considering United want three midfielders this summer, Hackney would have been a cheaper option to go alongside two marquee arrivals.

Hayden Hackney could trigger domino effect
According to David Ornstein at The Athletic, it is actually Everton who are leading the race for Hackney.
United are credited with interest in the 23-year-old, but the Red Devils are “not expected to pursue” a deal.
It seems United are prepared to miss out on Hackney, but the impact of his arrival at the Hill Dickinson Stadium could make James Garner available.
United were linked with Garner back in January, and Michael Carrick’s appointment will only strengthen those links.
Carrick used to mentor Garner at United, and a return to Old Trafford could be on the cards after he matured and developed at Everton.

Would he be an upgrade on the current midfield?🤔
Man Utd could revisit James Garner deal
Garner was a standout player this season, not just for Everton, but among all midfielders in the Premier League.
In a blow to United’s chances, Garner signed a new deal with Everton in January 2026, so the Toffees are under no pressure to sell.
However, if United arrived with a sizeable bid for the Carrington graduate, Everton may be tempted to sell knowing that Hackney is coming in to replace him in midfield.
