Hayden Hackney’s 104-match record under Michael Carrick as Man Utd step up transfer interest

Hayden Hackney is a target for Manchester United and he has plenty of experience playing under Michael Carrick.

Manchester United are expected to sign three midfielders this summer, and Middlesbrough star Hayden Hackney is an option as one of the cheaper targets.

According to reports, Michael Carrick is pushing for Hackney after working with the 23-year-old in the Championship.

Hackney loved working under Carrick, and now he could make the step up to join him at Old Trafford this summer.

How Hayden Hackney performed under Michael Carrick

Hackney spent the 2021/22 season out on loan at Scunthorpe United but returned to Middlesbrough for 2022/23 and quickly became a regular starter under Carrick’s management.

According to Transfermarkt, Hackney played 104 matches under Carrick, more than any other manager in his career.

Hackney won Middlesbrough’s Young Player of the Year award in 2022/23 after an excellent breakthrough season under Carrick.

Michael Carrick praises Hayden Hackney at Middlesbrough

During their time together, Carrick made Hackney a key part of Middlesbrough’s midfield.

As quoted by the Northern Echo, Carrick spoke extremely highly of Hackney back in 2024.

“You couldn’t ask for much more from Hayden,” Carrick said.

“He’s grounded, he’s humble, he’s down to earth and loves to learn. He loves the place and he loves the club as well.

He’s been exemplary really since I’ve been here and I really enjoy working with him. He’s desperate for more, desperate to learn, and he’s a real credit to his family, to himself and to the club.”
