Manchester United have long had a problem in filling the left-back or left wing-back department, ever since Patrice Evra’s exit 11 years ago.
Ruben Amorim’s system places a lot of emphasis on that left-sided player, with the wing-back often placed as the key creative outlet, to the detriment of Manchester United.
In an effort to solve the issue for Amorim, Patrick Dorgu was signed by United last January, as a young talent with the potential to be a future star for the club.
However, given his age and limited experience at the highest level, Dorgu is taking time to adapt, with his performances not consistent and his attacking output frustrating at the best of times.
Diego Leon is also miles from being first-team ready, and so the prospect of signing a ready-made starter to shoulder the burden and give the youngsters time to develop seems wise.
Now, Amorim is eyeing up exactly that.

Federico Dimarco on Manchester United’s radar for January swoop
Having a top-class left wing-back come through the doors to ease the pressure on Dorgu would be a smart move, considering the Dane hasn’t been able to settle so far.
Dorgu’s impressive pre-season performances are worlds apart in quality from the form he has shown in the Premier League.
So, Amorim is therefore planning to demand that United sign an additional left wing-back in January.
Now, according to Il Napolista in Italy, United have made Inter Milan’s Federico Dimarco a target for January.
Amorim is ‘very keen’ on signing the Italian, who is 27, with Inter unlikely to put up a fight to keep him. Dimarco has been placed high up on Amorim’s winter wishlist, with the importance of left wing-back meaning an upgrade is needed.
The Inter defender is set to see his contract expire in 2027, meaning a sale this winter makes a lot of sense, and for United, it ticks a box.
Amorim likes Dimarco’s technical and shooting qualities, which could see him become a real dangerman on the left in this system.
United enquired about Dimarco last December as well, however a move this season would be much cheaper.
Federico Dimarco could be a transformational signing for Manchester United
This season, frustrations have been growing, with Dorgu in too many key attacking positions, while more creative and technical players are not getting these chances.
In The Guardian’s list of the 100 best footballers on the planet in 2024, Dimarco ranked 53rd, showing his ability and the impact he could have in the left wing-back role.
Italian football expert Nicky Bandini wrote a paragraph of praise for Dimarco in this list.
“There cannot have been many more aesthetically pleasing goals this year than the one Dimarco scored for Italy against France in September, exchanging a one-two with Sandro Tonali, who returned the ball first-time with his heel, before volleying into the far corner.
“Perhaps that was what persuaded one of our panellists to rank Dimarco as high as seventh. More likely it was the constant attacking threat the player provides from the left wing-back position: a regular source of goals and assists for the club and country.”
