Diego Leon was one of five new Manchester United players to arrive this summer, although Ruben Amorim has yet to hand the left wing-back his debut.

Ineos backed Ruben Amorim as Manchester United’s head coach in the summer transfer window by investing significantly to bolster the squad.

The prioritised area was United’s attacking department as Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko joined. Amorim also signed Diego Leon as a back-up option at wing-back on the left flank before Senne Lammens arrived from Royal Antwerp on deadline day.

United fans questioned the decision to ignore central midfield, but it was always going to take Ineos a few years to rebuild the squad.

Some of the new signings have come into the team immediately, albeit after being part of pre-season preparations, while Amorim has been more patient with others such as Leon and Lammens.

Diego Leon’s agent reflects on Man Utd transfer

Amorim has taken a patient approach with Leon.

The 18-year-old is one for the future after costing United £3.2m from Cerro Porteno, and he is currently behind Patrick Dorgu in the pecking order. Amorim also has other senior options who can fulfil the role on the left flank, as seen in the past with Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand was excited by Leon’s arrival in June, but United fans have only seen him in action during pre-season.

Leon recorded an assist against Bournemouth during the Premier League Summer Series in the United States; however, he is still waiting for his first competitive appearance in United’s first team.

Reports suggest Amorim has kept Leon with the first team instead of training with the U21s.

In an interview with Versus Radio, as cited by Sport Witness, Leon’s agent highlighted the player’s adaptation and the expectations on him at Old Trafford.

Renato Bittar stressed that Leon is handling the challenge with maturity, amid reports that Casemiro was helping the youngster to settle. He is “happy with how he [Leon] is enjoying it, being the first Paraguayan at Manchester United.

“I think he will bring a lot of joy to the fans.”

Leon’s representative insisted that the youngster is “an excellent boy” who is “very focused and psychologically prepared” for the Premier League.

With United knocked out of the Carabao Cup, it remains to be seen when Leon will be given his debut.

What did Patrick Dorgu say about Leon?

Although Dorgu is just two years older than Leon, the Denmark international has a lot more experience than his new teammate.

United’s media team caught up with the Dane during the summer and got his immediate thoughts on Leon, who will soon be providing competition for the fellow left wing-back.

Dorgu told ManUtd.com: “He brings a lot of power and energy to the team and he’s very young, so it takes time to join into the team, but he’s doing really well.”

Leon’s ultimate aim will be to take Dorgu’s place in the team.
