Djed Spence is a Manchester United fan, England’s surprise star could become a left-back solution

Manchester United are in the market for a new left-back this summer and Djed Spence could emerge as an option.

Luke Shaw started every match of Manchester United’s 2025/26 Premier League campaign, but next season, Michael Carrick will need extra depth at left-back.

Harry Amass has returned from loan and will play a part in pre-season this summer, but reports suggest United could sign a new left-back.

There have been links to Lewis Hall, but he was beaten to the England squad by Djed Spence, and perhaps United should take that into account.

Djed Spence ticks multiple boxes for Manchester United

England crashed out of the World Cup with a 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals, but one of the best-performing Three Lions stars was surprisingly Djed Spence.

Spence won seven ground duels, made nine defensive contributions and even made a last-ditch tackle to deny Argentina a goal.

Eyebrows were raised when Thomas Tuchel included the 25-year-old Tottenham defender in his squad, but Spence leaves the World Cup with his head high and his reputation bolstered.

Fans on social media were also quick to point out that Spence is a boyhood United fan, and previously, it has been made clear that Spence would ‘love’ to join United.

So could he become an option for Ineos this summer?

Djed Spence is a perfect Ineos target

United’s transfer record in the last few years proves a couple of things: Ineos love Premier League-proven players, and they want signings to be ‘desperate’ to play for the Red Devils.

Spence ticks both those boxes. He joined Tottenham in 2022 and has become a key player in North London, and his desire to play for United is well-documented.

Also, Spence is 25 years old, entering his prime, which has been the case for many Ineos signings.

Spence’s versatility also adds to his value. He predominantly plays as a right-back, but Tuchel has preferred Spence on the left for England and his performances have been impressive.

At Tottenham, Spence is contracted to 2029, so they will not be forced to sell him anytime soon. But given their poor Premier League finishes in the last two years, he could force his way out of the club.
