Lisandro Martinez and Argentina reach the World Cup final, courtesy of a 2-1 win over England.

The world champions remain in the 2026 World Cup, meaning Manchester United centre-back Lisandro Martinez will feature in Sunday’s final.

Martinez started the match at centre-back alongside Cristian Romero.

England will now face France in the third-place play-off on Saturday.

How Lisandro Martinez fared for Argentina vs England

Argentina and England cancelled themselves out in the first half, with few chances on goal as both teams looked organised at the back.

Martinez was called upon to clear the ball on several occasions, but he received a yellow card before half-time for pulling Morgan Rodgers’ shirt.

It came as a surprise to England fans that Martinez was the only Argentine player booked in the first half, considering the number of fouls committed by Giuliano Simeone.

In the 55th minute, Anthony Gordon opened the scoring after finishing a cross from Rogers, becoming England’s fourth goalscorer at the tournament.

Martinez tried to block the in-swinging cross, but Rodgers had enough space to beat the first man.

Replaced in the 72nd minute by Argentina veteran Nicolas Otamendi, Martinez completed 40 of his 41 passes, including two into the final third.

Martinez touched the ball 46 times and made just one foul, for which he received a booking.

After Martinez’s substitution, Argentina clawed their way back into the game and forced a comeback, with two late goals to stun England.

Martinez is the only player representing United in the final.
