Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo was selected as a starter against Charlton Athletic, making his first team debut.

Manager Erik ten Hag explained that Mainoo had impressed in friendly matches and deserved his opportunity, with Donny van de Beek out injured.

Mainoo, only 17, was the second FA Youth Cup winner on the pitch, alongside Alejandro Garnacho.

The teenager did not look at all out of place, justifying Ten Hag’s decision to hand him his debut.

Verdict on Mainoo performance

Mainoo’s accomplished display was praised in the MUTV studio, with former trainee Danny Webber commending his performance.

Webber said: “He’s done well, he’s looked comfortable on the ball, adventurous when he can.

“He’s not over complicating it, and he’s kept it flowing.

“(He’s got) huge potential.”

Mainoo was playing as part of a three-man midfield along with Scott McTominay and Fred, with United taking the opportunity to rest Casemiro and Christian Eriksen from the start, while Bruno Fernandes was suspended.

Casemiro replaced Mainoo in the 59th minute, with United looking to finish off the game, leading 1-0 at the time.

Coming off for Casemiro is something Mainoo can be proud of too. The Brazilian is one of the best midfielders of his era, a five-times Champions League winner.

Mainoo had 35 touches, completing 23 of 27 passes, making five passes into the final third.

In the Manchester derby at the weekend, being a substitute is the best Mainoo can hope for, but he advanced his cause tonight with a very solid performance.

Mainoo is a star of the future, who signed a professional contract last summer, and he is well ahead of schedule.
