Manchester United fans saw enough of Jadon Sancho in his 83 appearances for the club to realise there was something missing.
The Jadon Sancho who United fans thought they were getting, was not the player who arrived. It was all style over substance, and a lack of fight.
His recent loan spell at Borussia Dortmund was a case in point. One impressive performance against PSG was the highlight which many casual observers clung to, and used as a stick to criticise United.
Just three goals in 21 appearances across the loan demonstrated that it was not the roaring success many cracked it up to be, and Dortmund did not come knocking to try and buy him permanently. Nor did anybody.
Chelsea had to be convinced into a loan to buy arrangement on deadline day, which will go through at the end of 2024/25.

Chelsea fans excited by Sancho
Jadon Sancho is busy getting on with his Chelsea stint, following a one-line thank you message to Manchester United, as lacklustre as his performances on the pitch.
Sancho, not part of the England squad, has been training at Cobham, and Chelsea fans are getting excited about him.
The Sun’s headline reports: “Chelsea fans convinced Jadon Sancho is the new Ronaldinho after seeing first training clips since Man Utd transfer.”
We hate to break it to them… but Sancho being compared to the former Brazilian icon is a wild miss. They are building him up only to be let down.
Trust us, Manchester United fans have been there. Sancho arrived with high hopes after his initial spell at Dortmund. He was billed as the next great winger, and looked like an ill-fit from his very first game.
At the time his exit was sealed, Sancho was being dubbed the worst Manchester United signing of all time.
Sancho was given opportunities
Much is made of Jadon Sancho’s falling out with Erik ten Hag, yet the Dutchman selected him more times than any other manager at the club.
Sancho simply didn’t perform under the manager who signed him, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and then immediately turned it on under his first successor, caretaker boss Michael Carrick.
| Manager | Games | Goals |
| Erik ten Hag | 45 | 7 |
| Ralf Rangnick | 21 | 3 |
| Ole Gunnar Solskjaer | 14 | 0 |
| Michael Carrick | 3 | 2 |
Sancho’s exit is a lucrative one for United in terms of his wage savings, and it is pleasing Chelsea have chosen to take him on.
New Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has big ideas, and has a wide variety of attacking players. Their 6-2 win over Wolves showed an expansive attacking threat, scoring more goals in an individual match than Manchester United have in any game under Erik ten Hag.
Perhaps it’s a scenario in which Sancho can thrive. And he might have his moments. They came and went occasionally at United, he just could not sustain it.
If Chelsea fans have moderate expectations then Sancho may be able to live up to them. Expecting him to be the next Ronaldinho is a one-way ticket to disappointment.
