Six best Scott McTominay moments at Manchester United

Manchester United are set to wave goodbye to Scott McTominay, with the midfielder on the verge of signing for Napoli.

Scott McTominay is set to sign for Serie A side Napoli, with The Athletic reporting a £25.4 million fee has been agreed between the two clubs.

McTominay has played 255 games for Manchester United since making his debut under Jose Mourinho in 2017.

He has scored 29 goals along the way, with 10 coming in the 2023/24 season, his best ever return.

Here is a look at five of Scott McTominay‘s best moments for Manchester United…

McTominay steps up in Paris (2019)

One of Scott McTominay’s finest moments, selected as part of a makeshift midfield as Manchester United took on PSG in Paris, 2-0 down from the first leg.

United were missing Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic, leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a patched up midfielder of McTominay, Fred, and Andreas Pereira.

It was this match that Solskjaer’s McFred partnership began to take shape, with United’s midfield playing their part in a shock result with a 3-1 win and away goal victory.

McTominay demonstrated in this game that he was a player who could be relied on, one who could step up in big circumstances.

Derby goal hero before lockdown (2020)

A goal which is perhaps Scott McTominay’s best ever in a Manchester United shirt, which gave supporters so much to cling onto during a tough period.

With United leading 1-0 against City at Old Trafford in early 2020, McTominay capitalised on a late Ederson mistake by scoring a long-range effort from 30 yards out.

The stadium erupted as Solskjaer’s side recorded a well-earned league victory over City, with a dominant performance from start to finish.

This turned out to be the final league game with fans in full attendance for 18 months due to Covid, and McTominay’s goal at least signed off in a glorious manner.

Starring performance in Europa League final (2021)

It would have been easy to pick out one of McTominay’s late winners instead of this one. The stoppage time goal against Omonia Nicosia, perhaps.

But sometimes a performance on a bigger stage simply says more about a player, even if it ends in defeat.

McTominay was selected as a starter in the 2021 Europa League Final, and delivered one of his most complete performances in a United shirt.

The Scotsman battled for every ball, dribbled through the Villarreal midfield on multiple occasions to drive the team forward, and gave absolutely everything before being taken off in the 120th minute.

He did everything he could, ending up on the losing side after a heartbreaking 11-10 penalty shootout defeat.

The loss made this a game United fans would rather forget, but had penalties gone our way, McTominay’s performance would have been remembered more fondly.

Destroying Leeds in three minutes (2021)

Leeds fans had high hopes after returning to the Premier League to take on Manchester United for the first time in 15 years.

Scott McTominay turned their hopes of an upset into a nightmare after just three minutes.

McTominay’s directness and ruthlessness in front of goal was too much for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, who conceded twice against him in the opening three minutes.

United won the game 6-2, with McTominay putting the result beyond doubt shortly after the game had kicked off.

McTominay would haunt Leeds further the following season, in a throwback game at Elland Road in wet and muddy conditions, which he lapped up, with United winning 4-2.

Stoppage time double vs Brentford (2023)

Under Erik ten Hag, Scott McTominay had seen his role reduced from starter to substitute, and in this role he developed into a game-changer.

Allowed to play in a more forward role, McTominay’s eye for goal proved useful to United, with the win against Brentford last season the standout moment.

United were heading to an utterly miserable home defeat heading into the international break, trailing 1-0, before Scott McTominay was sent on in the 87th minute.

In the third minute of injury-time McTominay struck an equaliser, rescuing a point. But there was more to come.

McTominay netted a winner in the seventh minute of stoppage time, turning defeat into 2-1 victory.

Winning the FA Cup Final

Cup finals had not been kind to Scott McTominay during his time at Manchester United. He was left as an unused substitute under Jose Mourinho in the 2018 FA Cup loss to Chelsea.

The Europa League Final also ended up in defeat, while he was only used from the bench in the 2023 Carabao Cup Final win, and 2023 FA Cup loss.

So it was a huge moment for McTominay when Erik ten Hag selected him as a starter against City in the 2024 final at Wembley, as part of a changed formation.

McTominay did not let his manager down, with United winning the game 2-1. It wasn’t the prettiest individual display, and nor did he score, but he played 90 minutes and lifted a winner’s medal at full-time. And that alone made it a magical moment.
