2020 was another rollercoaster year for Manchester United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continued his side’s search for consistency.

Manchester United 2-0 Manchester City
March 8th – Premier League
This was the last game played in front of fans at Old Trafford, which was absolutely rocking when Scott McTominay sealed the victory in stoppage time.
In the pouring rain, the Scotland international – on as a substitute – pounced on an error by Ederson to float a sumptuous chip into the net.
The subsequent celebrations were quite something. Old Trafford erupted and McTominay showed exactly what the goal meant to him.
Solskjaer had once again outthought Pep Guardiola and sealed a league double over City for the first time since 2010.
The win moved United into fifth, just three points off the Champions League spots. Solskjaer’s side showed real fight for their manager.
Leicester City 0-2 Manchester United
26th July – Premier League
United’s place in the Champions League boiled down to a clear task on the final day of the season – avoid defeat at the King Power Stadium.
After a tense first half, Bruno Fernandes grabbed the lead from the penalty spot to put United within touching distance.
It was Jesse Lingard of all people who sealed continental qualification, with his first league goal of the whole campaign.
That late strike sparked wild celebrations on the pitch and in the dugout.
Champions League qualification should never be United’s ultimate goal but it was a moment of celebration and relief; the culmination of a strong run of form post-lockdown and vindication for Solskjaer.
PSG 1-2 Manchester United
October 20th – Champions League Group Stage
19 months after Solskjaer’s finest hour in charge, United repeated history in Paris to mark their return to the Champions League.
A disciplined defensive performance was married with incision on the break as Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford outshone Kylian Mbappe and Neymar on their own turf.
United soaked up pressure in the second half before Solskjaer’s tactical switches swung the game his side’s way and Rashford’s driven finish earned a deserved win.
When Rashford rifled in a hat-trick against RB Leipzig to make it two European wins from two, it felt like United had re-announced themselves on the biggest stage of all.
That proved not to be the case but that evening in Paris will go down as as another famous European night in United’s rich history.
