Man Utd should hand ‘intelligent’ wonderkid a golden opportunity after latest news at Old Trafford

This season has already seen several injury problems surface for Manchester United, but the latest one could give one wonderkid a golden opportunity.

After the injury-plagued season during 2023/24, the worst nightmare of Erik ten Hag would have been a repeat of this situation at Manchester United.

This season has not been as bad as last, however, the number of injuries has been steadily rising and now Noussair Mazraoui has been added to that list after undergoing surgery.

Mazraoui was one of several United players called up for international duty – but most have withdrawn for various reasons including Amad Diallo.

For the Moroccan international, his withdrawal was been labelled a precaution, however now it’s been reported that Mazraoui has undergone minor surgery – although this is thought to be a new issue, not related to his worrying injury record at Bayern Munich.

With Mazraoui out, the door could finally be opened for Ten Hag to hand out United academy graduate 252.

Erik ten Hag must give Harry Amass his chance

So with Mazraoui out, Ten Hag has been left with just Diogo Dalot fit in terms of senior full-backs.

This is a problem as the Portuguese international cannot play both right and left full-back at the same time, so Ten Hag has a decision to make and Harry Amass could turn out to be a benefactor.

Recently, Ten Hag explained that he needed a left-footed left-back and Amass could be the solution having already shown he can play senior football during pre-season when he shined.

Against Real Betis, we saw Amass at his best level so far as he looked very solid in defence – while all but creating Amad Diallo’s goal with a cross.

Amass vs Real Betis

Despite all the positives and qualities that he has to offer, Amass’ physicality is thought to be a problem and a reason behind his debut being yet to arrive.

This season so far, Amass has been shining for the U21s and showing why he has been tipped to become one of the best left-backs in the world.

When Amass signed for United he was made aware that he had a bright future at the club, and United still view the 17-year-old as a special talent.

So with all of this considered, when facing Brentford a week on Saturday, United could finally give Amass his golden opportunity to shine.

Manchester United have other options but Amass would be best

While Amass is quite clearly the best option to slot into the squad in the wake of Mazraoui’s injury – Ten Hag has already lost one incredible prospect in the position, so there is no guarantee he will use Amass.

Alvaro Fernandez is currently showing his brilliance for Benfica and last season United were crying out for a player with his abilities – only for Ten Hag to use Sofyan Amrabat instead.

Now, United are linked with a swoop to bring Fernandez back to the club in an embarrassing turn of events.

If Amass is not to be handed a debut, it could be that Toby Collyer is utilised in this role after impressing against Twente.

Lisandro Martinez’s fitness doubts also mean he may not be an option for Ten Hag.

Hopefully, it is Amass we get to see making his debut against Brentford where he will face the stern task of dealing with Bryan Mbeumo.
