Man Utd stance on ‘special’ Harry Amass could influence plans for 2025

Eyebrows were certainly raised when Harry Amass was not in the squad against Barnsley, but he has no need for concern.

One of the stars of Manchester United’s summer tour to the United States was Harry Amass as he made his breakthrough into the first team and caught the eye with a string of impressive displays.

Amass started for United against Liverpool, Arsenal and Real Betis – impressing in each of the outings although also showing some weakness.

After showing a weakness off the ball and in defensive situations, Amass dropped back down to U21 action but has been training with the first team.

But despite not making his debut yet, Amass has no reason for concern considering the club’s stance on him.

How Manchester United feel about Harry Amass

Amass’ star will continue to rise as he works hard to earn a competitive debut for United – one he will have been disappointed to miss out on against Barnsley in the 7-0 win – although he will now have the Europa League tie against FC Twente on his radar.

But the English left-back can still be encouraged by United’s stance on him, as journalist Graeme Bailey has explained to United in Focus when discussing the position.

“Left back is something we’ve reported they are looking at, we know both Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot can both play on the left so they are pretty well covered there in some regards.

“There is a huge belief within the club that Harry Amass, what I’m told by the club is they have huge ambitions for him, they think he could be quite special.

“I think they’ll be comparing Amass’ potential with other players they are looking at, which might explain why they didn’t push harder for a left-back during the summer.”

Considering how highly United rate Amass, it is even more of a shock that he missed out against Barnsley with Toby Collyer instead starting at left-back.

The only explanation is that he needs more work off the ball before being thought ready to start for United competitively. However, Amass will be thrilled with how highly rated he is by the club with Travis Binnion saying it perfectly.

Ineos could be forced into movement

While the club are very excited by Amass, there could yet be an urgency to sign a player capable of bridging the gap until Amass is ready to take on the mantle.

This is where Graeme has mentioned Ben Chilwell as a possible addition to help cover until Amass is deemed ready for the big time.

“They did enquire for Ben Chilwell, but that was only an opportunist one. If Chilwell is still there I wouldn’t rule it out even in January.”

However, Amass is far from a sure thing, and Ineos are also considering other young left-backs with Patrick Dorgu from Leece being considered – although not while Amass is still considered the future.

“Dorgu is someone they have scouted and like a lot but they don’t want to clog up the system and I imagine they will be assessing Amass over the next six months.”

So the development of Amass is likely to have a pretty big effect on how United conducts transfer business in 2025 – hopefully, he gets a chance in the Europa League and can establish himself.
